Material Monday

My kitchen looks like a disaster area. I think I might declare a state of emergency in there. Not only have I ignored dishes for 2 days, I have spread all my sewing materials from the eat-in area into the kitchen as well. Think I can get some FEMA money to clean it up?

Well, today was spent designing curtains. I THOUGHT that I had the design I wanted yesterday. Then, after sewing the prototype, I decided to start over. So, I pulled out my home decorating books and found something better.

THEN my hubby pipes in and says what if you gave it a little textile contrast? I almost kicked him below his stomach. But he was right. It was too boring. But it made the project 16 times harder, and I needed to go get new fabric. Off to the store I went.

Then I came home and started sewing. And had one of these:


And sewed some more. And did some seam ripping. Then I sewed some more. All for one stinking curtain. But here it is:


Ignore the wrinkle, that will come out later. I just really wanted to see how it looked.

Hopefully I can get 2 done tomorrow. That is the goal.

I will need more alcohol though.

Spatial Sunday

Have you seen my eat-in area? Probably not because I don't take many pictures in there. Because it is so boring. I have lived in this house for 3 years and have yet to even put window treatments in that area.

So, while I was sitting on the couch in the living room last week, something outside caught my eye in a window in the eat-in area. It was a dude in the backyard next door. Looking into my house.

Now the house next door as almost a half acre of property. So our neighbors that used to live there rarely if ever made the trek to the very back of their property. But a random dude looking to buy the property did. And it was creepy.

Here was my temporary fix:

I moved my palm tree into the window and put up some sheers I bought a long time ago for the slider. Incidentally, this did not actually block the directional view into our house. But I felt better for a week.

Today I pulled out fabric I had bought a long time ago to make curtains and began the journey. I was only able to get to the slider today so tomorrow I will start on the window curtains. Here are today's results:

I just added more curtain rings. And panels on either end. It looks more put together.

I also finished my puzzle today. I want another one.

Sewing Saturday

I had to work today, but to reward myself, I went fabric shopping after work!

I used the fabric to make a gift for a baby that is to be born on a very special day - my birthday! *At least according to her registry* So, If your name is Michele, stop reading now because your present is described below. You'll see it on Saturday!




I would also like to take this time to thank my Granny for teaching me to sew! I love her and miss her so much. I would have loved to sew with her today.

Tactile Blankie
These are all the rage right now - it provides different textures for babies to feel. Why this is so exciting I don't know, but I made one anyway!

1/2 yard of flannel
1/2 yard of super soft fleece or "minky" like fabric
Various grosgrain and satin ribbon (non-wired)
Thread

Cut each fabric to desired size; I cut mine into 17" x 17" squares.

Cut ribbon to desired size and numbers; I cut mine into 5" lengths and put one of each kind (3 different kinds) on each side. So I had 12 cuts of ribbon. Baste ribbon onto wrong side of flannel, leaving desired amount of ribbon hanging off:



Flip ribbon loop to right side of fabric and pin or iron down, making sure to leave flannel edges straight:

Pin both fabrics right sides together and sew together with a 1/2" seam, leaving one corner open.

Pull fabric through open corner so it is right side out. Finish corner with blind slip stitch or as desired. I folded the raw edges in and finished with a decorative stitch. I then sewed a heart applique in the corner.

Binky Clip
I thought these were a pretty neat invention: I see babies losing their binkies on the ground all of the time. This keeps them on the stroller or baby at all times.

Easy, easy, easy! I just didn't finish it off with a bow. Here are some I made before, and Michele's is below in the final picture.
